Often referred to as the Oxford of Bengal, the birth place of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, it is one of the oldest districts of West Bengal. This ancient Sanskrit learning centre was the founding place of one the famous Indian schools of logic - the Navya Nyaya System and gave birth to some of the greatest logicians of the 15th century.An important seat of political power and the capital of Bengal under Ballal Sen and later Lakshman Sen, Nadia was finally annexed by Bakhtiyar Khilji, paving the way for the Mughal rule. Nabadwip

Located on the western banks of the Hooghly, the heritage town of Nabadwip is regarded as a holy place by Hindus, and is the birth place of the sage Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Famous for its Rasa festival where the city is enlit with lights, idols of gods and goddesses, Nabadwip is thronged by Hindus all over the world for Gaura Purnima and also on Dol Yatra. This old capital of the Sena Dynasty was a centre of learning and philosophy in medieval India and is still noted for its traditional Sanskrit schools.

Mayapur

Mayapur is situated in an area somewhere in the middle of the rivers Hooghly and Jalangi, and is one of the main of the nine islands of the Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's dham Nabadwip. The holiest of all places in entire India, Mayapur Chandrodaya Temple of ISKCON is the major reason why devotees all over the world come to this sacred land. Inside you can see the magnificent deities of Panchatattva, Lord Nrisingha Dev, Srila Prabhupada and Radha - Madhav with the Gopis. This is a place flowing with devotion like no other place on earth.

Ballal Dhipi

For centuries, a large mound covering an area of 1,300 sq. ft. and 30 ft tall has existed in Bamunpukur, a village close to Mayapur. The locals call it Ballal Dhipi, credited to Ballal Sen of the Sena Dynasty who ruled Bengal in the late 12th Century AD. Visit it and feel the pulse of a rich legacy as it engulfs your senses.

Phulia/ Shantipur

The birth place of 'Adi Kavi' of Bengal Krittibas Ojha, the combined weaving belt of Shantipur, Phulia, Samudragarh, Dhatrigram and Ambika Kalna are famous for its finely woven feather-touch textiles and saris in exotic designs and colours - each centre producing superb fabrics in its own unique weaving style. Dhatrigram produces Jacquards and Jamdanis while Kalna is famous for Tangails and gorgeous Jamdanis. Phulia and Samudragarh specialize in a combination of Jacquard and Jamdani work which are based on Tangail Saree Culture of Bangladesh which Santipur is known for superfine dhotis and Jacquards. The temples of Shantipur built in the traditional "atchala" style are worth vistiing Shyam Chand Temple, Jaleswar Temple and Adwaiata Prabhu Temple often excellent examples of the beautiful terracotta style that was once prevalent in Nadia.

Shiv Niwas Temple

Famous for the largest Shiv Lingam in East India, the temple premises once consisted of 108 Shiva temples built by Maharaja Krishna Chandra in 1754 AD, out of which only two survived. These two temples along with the Ram - Sita temple and the ruins of Krishna Chandra's palace are all that remains of Shiv Niwas's glorious past. Ghurni
The centre for the creation of magnificent clay dolls, also known as Krishnanagar clay dolls, is Ghurni, located on the banks of the river Jalangi. This place is only 12 kms distance from Hotel Shreesh -Mayapur. Most of the world's handicraft museums include the works of these skilled artisans. You can go to the neighbourhood where there are all the stores that produce, exhibit, and sell famous clay idols and dolls from across the world.

Natungram
The beauty of handicrafts still exists in Natungram, which is approx 52 kms from Hotel Shreesh -Mayapur. You will discover the artisans here still stick to old-school techniques as it is their way of holding on to their heritage. The dolls are initially chiseled from a piece of dried wood that has been trimmed to the necessary length. Followed by the painting of their faces and clothing. Despite the dolls' lack of contemporary refinement, they possess a rustic beauty that characterizes this ethnic craft. Dolls come in three to four different varieties. Even though the dolls are armless, the sari of the bride is painted with such perfection that you won't notice anything out of the ordinary.
